Creative DIY Gift Wrapping Ideas (with a Gift Box Made From a Book)

Sure. You can throw a gift into a bag and be done. But that’s like making cinnamon rolls and using too little frosting. Everyone loves cinnamon rolls, but they love them more with gobs of frosting. You see where I’m going here? A thoughtfully wrapped gift will put a smile on anyone’s face even before they get to what’s inside! I have a few creative DIY gift wrapping ideas that you are going to love. My favorite? I’m showing you how to turn a book into a gift box! This is the PERFECT way to present a gift to your favorite bibliophile.

How to Turn a Book Into a Hidden Gift Box

This project starts off with crafting basics that you likely have in your home already. Otherwise, I’ve linked everything for you!

What You’ll Need:

  • Cardboard Box
  • Craft Knife
  • Ruler
  • Cutting Mat
  • Tape
  • Hot Glue
  • Wrapping Paper

    STEP ONE:

First you’ll need to use the ruler to take two key measurements, pictured below.

Measurement A = the width of the page in the book

Measurement B = the height of the page in the book, minus 1/2 inch.

These measurements do not have to be precise. If anything it’s better to err on the side of smaller versus larger. What I mean is, if the page width is roughly 5.25″ – I’d just go with 5″ and call it a day. This isn’t surgery. Imperfection is acceptable here.

    STEP TWO:

Time to cut the cardboard to the correct size. This is where those measurements come in handy!

Use the photo below as your guide. For example, if the page width of your book is 5″, the entire width of the cardboard should be 12″ across.

Remember, the dotted white lines are scored! This means you should use the craft knife to cut through the top layer of cardboard but not all the way through!

    STEP THREE:

    Time to assemble!

First, fold the cardboard into a triangle and tape together.

Then, trace the base of the triangle onto cardboard and cut it out.

Adhere the cut out shape the base of the wedge using hot glue. Then cover with wrapping paper.

At this point, you’ve essentially created a wedge shaped box that will fit into your book. Place it inside the middle of the book and use a rubber band around the entire book to hold it in place.

What to Put Inside a Book Gift Box

You have tons of options for how to fill up your book gift box! Here are a few ideas:

    • Choose a theme! Grab a cute summer read and fill it with beach essentials like I did here.
    • Tape skewers onto gift cards to create a bouquet of gift card for your favorite birthday friend!
    • CANDY!! Pour candy into the wedge shaped box!
    • Book lover essentials! Add a bookmark, reading light and a set of fun pens into the gift box.
    • Flowers! For this particular gift box, I went with flowers! Just make sure to package them in a plastic bouquet sleeve to keep water from damaging the pages of the book.
