Another day. Another basket. This time using birch. Back when it was wintertime for the rest of the world (summertime here in Miami), I used birch in this rustic winter project and this valentine’s day card set. Now that spring is here, I’m giving birch another makeover.

Crafting a birch basket is way easy, but you will need to get your hands on some birch bark. If you happen to have birch trees around you, you could probably just go grab some of the fallen bark. Here in the middle of downtown Miami, we don’t have too many birch trees (shocker, right?) …but luckily Save-On Crafts has plenty.

You don’t need many supplies for this project!

{1} Birch bark sheets

{2} Chipboard (very thick cardstock could also work)

{3} craft glue (not pictured)

{1} Create a box with the chipboard. You can create any size you want, but I’ve provided a simple template below for the box that I created for this project.

{2} Cut chipboard pieces to fit the size of your box and then cover each piece with birch. You’ll adhere these pieces to the sides of the box and add a handle made in the same way.

sample-box-templateWhen it’s all said and done, you’ll have created a rustic and very pretty birch basket. I filled mine with reindeer moss along with some handmade treat bags…keep scrolling and you’ll see how I put them together.

I even had them customized with the Damask Love name…so official (like a ref with a whistle). I’ll be giving these away to friends who read the blog!

  1. I love that birch basket. You are so clever. Oh wait, have I said that recently?
I meant to get back yesterday to tell you how great your cupcake baskets were.
Can’t wait for your next edition of High Society.
Thanks for such a sweet note the other day.

  2. How clever, Amber, to attach those chocolate bunnies to a card using colored twine! That birch basket is simply divine. Thanks for sharing the basket template.

  3. I love the shape and style of your basket here, Damask! And happy to see it is made using bark from dead trees! I have an Amazon book about making birch bark baskets. If people want to purchase it, they can get it on Amazon! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AYQ6LJI/ The book has detailed instructions and lots of pictures for making 2 different birch bark baskets. Rather than cut pieces like you do, my baskets are actually sewn together. 🙂
