Anytime I think of “raffia” I think of “Raffi” – that kid’s song guy who sings Baby Beluga.  Don’t act like you don’t know that song.

Raffia actually has nothing to do with a middle-aged man strumming a guitar and singing children’s songs, but has everything to do with spools of wrinkled paper ribbon just begging for a makeover. Raffia is kind of sad on it’s own. It’s sad the way cottage cheese is sad until you add some fruit. Raffia just needs a little help. A boost.  It needs to be bunched together into a shoe clip – then it instantly become aweseomesauce. When I saw these shoe clips, I knew I could recreate them in no time. So I did…and now I will show you how to do it too.

What you need:

  • Raffia (went to The Container Store and got a few spools of brightly color raffia, but you can also pick this up at your craft store).
  • small gold beads (picked these up from Michael’s)
  • e6000 glue
  • 1.5″ wide strip of chipboard
  • shoe clips
  • small circle cut from gold leather
  • scissors

DIY Raffia Shoe Clips | damask love

  1. Wrap raffia around the chipboard
  2. Use scissors to cut a small opening in the middle of the chipboard then slide the wrapped raffia on top of the strip, then tie the raffia together as shown, then slide off the chipboard
  3. Cut the raffia apart
  4. Pinch the center of the raffia circle
  5. Cut a small circle of leather and glue it to the center
  6. Glue the small gold beads to the leather circle

  1. Let’s ignore the fact that I’d look like a dweeb in these and just focus on how I have the world’s most boring collection of flats. Clearly I need to up my game!

  2. Girl, you just keep making me smile with these flats. I love them all, but I think today’s creation is my favorite. Or was it the pineapples. What happy things you do with flats!

    1. these are my favorites too! Although – those pineapples are a close second…and the ice cream…and the emojis…and the koosh balls. So many shoe clips!

  3. Note to self: Do NOT look at this blog while at work. It makes me want to bolt to the craft store and have fun crafting.

These are adorable and I really like the fun, happy colors! They would also be adorable on a tote bag like the one you had on the blog the other day about tassels.

    1. my mission in life! get everyone fired from their day job because they keep sneaking off to the craft store! LOL! and you are TOTALLY right – this raffia DIY would work great as an embellishment on a tote. I love the way you think!

  4. Hi ! I really really love your blog, so much colors and nice projects. How on earth do you manage to do all this ? Your optimism is incredible. Sorry my post begins to be weird, it was not my intention. But I’m allways impressed by such energy. (Sorry for the mistakes I’m french).
I’m looking forward to read your new posts 🙂
